Back from Aviles + Blackwells

July 23rd, 2012

Back from a wonderful few days at the Celsius festival at Aviles in Spain and I really need to thank the organisers, Jorge Argyz, Cristina Macias, Diego Cruz, and Ian Watson for inviting me, as well as the Spanish readers who turned out and a set of writers and associates whose company I very much enjoyed, among them Adam Nevill, Lisa Tuttle, Colin Murray, Dmitry Glukhovsky and GRRM, who enjoys a level of celebrity in Spain (and probably elsewhere these days) that I really hadn’t seen before with a writer – vast queues all three days for his signings and events, an onslaught of interviews and photo requests, and he still manages to maintain a smile and haunt the bar til 3.30 in the morning.  Lovely town, very well organised festival, I warmly recommend it.

My next appearance, now confirmed, will be a High Fantasy Night at Blackwells in London (100 Charing Cross Road) alongside me old buddies Peter V. Brett and Myke Cole on Friday August 17th, starting at 18.00 and finishing at 20.30.  Not sure of the exact content, but the signing of books will certainly be a strong possibility.  Hope to see some of you there, maybe…

    Joe,

Someday when one of your books is turned into a movie you will miss the old days of being able to chat it up with your fans better. Wait this is Joe Abercrombie i’m talking to you will love the long lines of people to worship in your greatness hhehehe.

Well to feed your ego on GRRM not a blog he did list your name first of all the people he met with!!!

    Sirkay,
I have no doubt it was a big moment for him…

    Yea man —

Let’s get a forum upgrade with registered users; a full wiki going and a few “coming soon to HBO … The Blade Itself” commercials. Let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time before your stories snowball into an avalanche of mass-popularity. I will be proud to claim that I was on the bandwagon before the tv-show posers showed up! 🙂

August 17th? There with bells on. And you’ve already signed all my copies of your books – reckon I’llhave to get you to start signing other authors’ works. PLEASE post a reminder about it, I’d dig to be there. I would wear my Joe Abercrombie t-shirt to it, but the folk at Forbidden Planet unfortunately seem to have given me a girl’s shirt last time. I don’t look pretty in it, not at all!

A welcome return indeed, and many thanks for bringing summer back with you, my tomatoes were in dire need of some sun.

With publication just three months away, what happens to your life now – a chance to catch a breather perhaps or is it gear up for publicity time?

    Joe,

Please tell me you’ll be coming back to Guildford to do a signing when your new books out.

I meant to go along to the last one but things got in the way (sounds crap I know).

  • Avery says:

What were you and GRRM doing in the bar at 3:30 in the morning? Any drinking games?

  • Simon says:

If you see GRRM in the bar at 3am again get him to bed he needs to look after himself, those books aren’t gonna write them selves 😉

  • Joe Abercrombie says:

    Michael,
Still working on the book at the mo.

    Phil,
Dates for the UK should be confirmed shortly. I very much hope and expect we’ll go to guildford to do an evening event because the daytime signing there was one of the best we did. They’re great in that shop. But we’ll see.

    Avery,
    No games, just drinking.

    Simon,
I’m sure he never tires of hearing that…

I’m very glad that you enjoyed the Celsius 232 festival. It was really a pleasure meeting you and attending to your talk.

By the way, I recorded the talk and you can watch it on my blog:

    http://sentidodelamaravilla.blogspot.com.es/2012/07/video-de-joe-abrecrombie-en-el-festival.html

I’ve also published a shorter video with the parts in English only:

    http://sentidodelamaravilla.blogspot.com.es/2012/07/video-joe-abercrombie-at-celsius-232.html

The quality of the video is not the best, but the talk was so interesting that I think it is really worth watching. Hope you enjoy!

  • Joe Abercrombie says:

    Odo,
Loved the town, loved the people. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for putting up the videos. Hope to see you there again, some day…

Hello, Joe. It’s a pleasure to post in this blog!

Your regards to all Spanish readers from Celsius 232 has been published at: http://www.leerunas.com/2012/07/joe-abercrombie-saluda-los-lectores.html

“Lee Runas” it’s the new place for all books published in “Alianza – Runas” collection, including your “The First Law” trilogy or “Best Served Cold” (great novels, I must say).

As you know, “The Heroes” will be published in 6th September, so there will be a little contest (including at my literary webspace, La Espada en la Tinta: http://www.laespadaenlatinta.com/) to give readers the chance to get some free novels, like the whole “First Law” or “The Heroes” itself. Few days ago we gave away two Best Served Cold (La Mejor Venganza), so people could enjoy the novel before The Heroes.

Hope we can see again at Celsius!
