Bedlam, Bath

May 25th, 2009

Experiencing the most manic couple of weeks of my life at the moment. Been to Portugal for a wedding and Southport for a funeral with a two year old and a two month old in tow, and during the two days in between the two trips entirely packed up and moved all our stuff into storage, sold our flat in London, bought a house in Bath. That house has been rewired, has the plumbers in and will be shoddily decorated by me this week, then I’m off next Monday to sign a thousand books at the warehouse, will be looking after the kids on tuesday, will actually move in on wednesday, then I’m off to manchester, then london to do signings on thursday and friday. Life’s rich tapestry.

Progress on the new book, as you might imagine, has been negligible. At least this once I have an excuse.

To add to my woes my email is screwed, so I can get emails via the usual route (see contact page) but unfortunately cannot send any. So do not hope to get a reply to anything any time soon…

In the meantime, I note that Pat of the redoubtable Hotlist, noted organ of the internet sf&f; scene, has reviewed Best Served Cold and he actually quite liked it thank you very much:

“Abercrombie’s latest is his most ambitious work to date. Moreover, if it’s any indication of what he is capable of, it bodes well for the future indeed. His accessible style could make him one of the biggest names in the genre in the years to come.”

11 letters surely makes mine one of the biggest names in the genre already…

“Best Served Cold is an excellent tale of murder and vengeance. It’s a morally ambiguous work with many shades of gray. The good guys become the bad guys, and vice versa, and back again. There are more twists and turns than in The First Law, and I get the feeling that Joe Abercrombie truly came into his own while writing this one. Best Served Cold is filled to the brim with all the elements that made The First Law such an enjoyable reading experience, yet it is definitely the work of a more mature author.”

I have been accused of many things, but never before maturity.

“If you are one of those poor drifting souls who have yet to give Joe Abercrombie a shot, Best Served Cold is your opportunity to get acquainted with the author’s style. For fans of Abercrombie, it will scratch that itch and more. Hard to put down.”

You heard the man. Scratch that itch, people.

Right, back to the madness…

Don’t worry too hard, I don’t think he meant mature mature, just more mature than before.

Immensely enjoying Before They Are Hanged right now, thanks for that.

Hope you enjoy living in Bath! You’re arriving at just the right time of year. 🙂

Alright,so getting a good review in Hotlist is all well and good, but untill NOW! magazine give it a ‘five love hearts out of five’rating i’ll hold on to my coinage. I live my life around the teachings of NOW! btw skinny jeans are so yesterday….

  • Hi. A pity you didn't try to contact anybody in the SF&F; scene in Portugal. Some publishers are considering optioning your books, you might have helped them stay on the right path 🙂

House refurbishing…email/PC problems…no progress on new book…man, you’re becoming GRRM;-)

  • Tobi A says:

Do you plan on coming to north america anytime soon?
And the book should just come out already, I’m getting anxiety attacks from waiting for this thing..

Also, do you have any idea where Scott Lynch is? And when The Republic Of Thieves book is coming out?

  • At least now the SFX team won’t have to travel too far to get their next Moody Author Shot!

Tobi A, I am reliably informed that THE REPUBLIC OF THIEVES’ current release date (April 2010 in the UK, perhaps a bit later in the USA but nothing confirmed yet) is looking pretty solid.

  • Bombie,
Absolutely, and we’re talking about a really low baseline here.

    Slick,
When life begins again I’ll let you know. That’ll be some time in 2011.

    Erik,
    Thanks.

    Badger,
Don’t know how much edgy fantasy NOW! magazine reviews.

    Luis,
I had heard this, but I’m sure they can decide without me sticking my nose in.

    Anon,
Except without the fans, the track record, or the money.

    Tobi A,
It’s only me, Pat Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, and Ray Feist who live in the same big house together. I’m not going all the way to the house next door to find out what Scott Lynch is up to…

    Adam W,
I can email them moody shots from wherever I am.

    Hi Joe,

We’ve been trying to get in touch but technology has failed us. Any ideas? We could send you our phone numbers or mail you stuff. Let us know here, and we’ll email you with the details.

    Thanks!

  • Jim,
So sorry. Head up my ass and can’t send any email. If you email a phone no to the address on the contact page, I can call you back soon as.

  • jimsteel says:

Thanks, Joe. I’ll pass the message along the chain and we’ll hopefully get things sorted out soon.

Status on Best Served Cold was just updated to “available” on my swedish booksite. They’re telling me it’s in the mail, is that possible?! Will they break my heart and leave me hanging for another week?
Also, why is the book described as “the new bestseller by Abercrombie”? Is it already a bestseller? How does that work?

  • David Wagner says:

Enjoy the ride while you can, my friend. You have both my envy and my fanboyism.

Well, not “friend” in the traditional, real-life sense… I mean, I don’t have you over for tacos and Red Bull once a month like I do with the Pope… but you know what I mean… like “friend” as in the “you once responded to a comment I left in your blog and so I vowed to only read your books from that moment on” type of mildly-creepy online friendship…

    O nevermind!

Picked up “Best served cold” this morning in Bray, Ireland. A nice surprise, I thought it wasn’t released until June 🙂

  • daft sod says:

I wanted to pick up Best Served Cold at Waterstones in London last Tuesday. Unfortunately it wasn’t available. I’m reading the Night Angel Trilogy to bridge the gap between now and Best Served Cold.

  • Emma says:

    Yay!
I came safety back to germany (even though my neck is another opinion after that damn night in that fucking hot bus).
The books over there are really cheap and on Thursday I got my “Best Served Cold” at Waterstones in Brighton.
And I saw “The Adamantine Palace” and picked it , first ’cause I noticed the cover and thought about buying it too, and seeing your comment I decided to buy it.
Hopefully it’ll be as good as yours.

The first 100 Pages of BSC are good, but they would be better if there’d be Logen.
I miss him and hope I will meet him within the Book againmg.

    Hi :0)
Long time reader, first time commenter. Just wanted to say that my local (and slightly naughty?) Waterstones had Best Served Cold on sale early, and I am thoroughly enjoying it! Best book yet, utterly brilliant!

  • Jared says:

    Huzzah!

I was lucky enough to read this early – which makes me doubly-lucky, as now I can get another copy (or six) and start re-reading…

Yay! My bookstore here in Oslo had BSC and now it's in my excited little hands. Will be waiving it in your face at the signing 😀
