Rejoice, for I note that Messrs Martin and Dozois have a huge new multi-genre, multi-author, multi-kickass anthology coming out from Tor in the US to follow up on their highly successful Warriors. This one is titled Dangerous Women, the theme being, I would have thought, fairly self-explanatory. The table of contents:
INTRODUCTION, by Gardner Dozois
SOME DESPERADO, by Joe Abercrombie
MY HEART IS EITHER BROKEN, by Megan Abbott
NORA’S SONG, by Cecelia Holland
THE HANDS THAT ARE NOT THERE, by Melinda Snodgrass
BOMBSHELLS, by Jim Butcher
RAISA STEPANOVA, by Carrie Vaughn
WRESTLING JESUS, by Joe R. Lansdale
NEIGHBORS, by Megan Lindholm
I KNOW HOW TO PICK ‘EM, by Lawrence Block
SHADOWS FOR SILENCE IN THE FORESTS OF HELL, by Brandon Sanderson
A QUEEN IN EXILE, by Sharon Kay Penman
THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR, by Lev Grossman
SECOND ARABESQUE, VERY SLOWLY, by Nancy Kress
CITY LAZARUS, by Diana Rowland
VIRGINS, by Diana Gabaldon
HELL HATH NO FURY, by Sherilynn Kenyon
PRONOUNCING DOOM, by S.M. Stirling
NAME THE BEAST, by Sam Sykes
CARETAKERS, by Pat Cadigan
LIES MY MOTHER TOLD ME, by Caroline Spector
THE PRINCESS AND THE QUEEN, by George R.R. Martin
My story is some 8,000 words, an adjunct to Red Country featuring an episode from Shy South’s abortive career as the outlaw Smoke.
Some further details to be found on GRRM’s blog (or not a blog). I hope there’ll be a UK publication but that remains to be seen. Publication date also remains for now a mystery. More news as I have it…
Incidentally, all my short stuff from the First Law world (there are currently five stories published or in the pipeline and more to follow in due course) will be gathered into an anthology at some stage, but definitely don’t hold your breath for that one.

I held my breath… Until I read the last sentence. Now I’m sad.
But I’m still holding my breath. A bit.
Ooo, that anthology is on my list.
I’ll be crossing all digits, if not holding my breath, that your short stuff will be gathered in an anthology. That would be awesomesauce!
So long as such an anthology doesn’t follow what I’ve always considered in storyline anthologies as something of a death knell for a certain phase of writing.
Kind of like when Moorcock pulled what I now refer to as a Philip K. Dick (or Gore Vidal) and got away from his bread and butter for more esoteric stuff (ah… the 70s).
He put a temporary wrap on Elric with an anthology of short stuff that, in retro, I was glad to not see make the cut. I remember thinking I would have rather Stormbringer being the last Elric I read than “Elric At The End of Time.” Foof.
Lesson being: Don’t add permanence to ending any world you may wish to return to. And get that anthology out sooner than later… strike while there’s more in the works so that they don’t have an air of a posthumous (for the characters/world) release.
Looks like a good line-up of authors! Good choice by the editors to start with the strongest story to get it going. 🙂 I look forward to reading!
Could you post a list of your short stories and where to find them. Extremely excited to here about the anthology. All in due time I guess.
LOVE LOVE the First Law world short story anthology idea!!
Listen you, crack on with that, if you don’t mind.
I am anxious to buy it.
Mr Dozois is the stunning report and blinding flash of Anthologists, well done for getting the nod from him.
Storm,
The Fool Jobs – in Swords and Dark Magic, edited by Jonathan Strahan and Lou Anders
Yesterday, Near a Village Called Barden – in the Waterstones hardcover edition of the Heroes (I think these two are also with the enhanced ebook of the Heroes)
Freedom! – in the Waterstones hardcover edition of Red Country
Some Desperado – forthcoming in Dangerous Women
Tough Times all Over – forthcoming (probably not soon)
I do hope there’s a Morveer short story in there somewhere.
Buncha my favorites in there…..goody.
GRRM and Abercrombie in the same book. Erection? Yes. Yes, indeed.
” Freedom! – in the Waterstones hardcover edition of Red Country”
Hmmm, will have to search for it.
Abercrombie and Martin are of course an instant sell, but Grossman piques my interest, too. His Magicians books have been wonderful.
Oh man. GRM, Joe Abercrombie and … Joe Landsdale?! Sweet baby Jeebus, I’m on fire.
Hi Joe,
is there any news about the planned anthology? Cant wait to read the short stories!
Thx,
Christian
Thanks for the blog. Indeed, any news about the anthology? I’m hunting high and low for the “Yesterday, Near A Village Called Barden” short story but with no luck whatsoever. Amazon says it is not in the enhanced ebook version of the heroes 🙁 any suggestions (for my Gorst fix)?
