US Release

June 29th, 2012

Whisky deathmatch is sadly delayed yet again by a bit of a rush to get through the copy edit of Red Country (which has just appeared) in time  to be incorporated into proof copies, all aggravated by the sudden death of my monitor.  Sad.  But it was a pretty good innings.  About five years, I think, and there’s a new one already on the way!  Happy!  And it’s bigger and better than the dead one!  Very happy!  Until, of course, it turns up and there’s some unanticipated compatibility issue and I can’t use it.  Very sad. In other news, the publication date for Red Country has moved in the US.  In the UK it remains the same, 18th October, but those hard working folks at Orbit US have pulled out all the stops to bring their pub date forward, and will be bringing it to our American cousins just five paltry days later, on 23rd October.  Celebrate, Americans!

  • 5 whole days? What is this, communist Russia?!

No Game of Thrones season 2 for you brits! 🙂

  • Madman42 says:

Celebration commencing! Whiskey shots all around!

  • Mark Armitage says:

As a Welshman now living in the States and a huge fan of your work, this comes as very, very good news!

  • Hawkeye says:

Thank the Gods!! Only 118 days to go!

  • Eric James Soltys says:

I looked for your books on Google Play, but had to go buy the Kindle editions. I see other Gollancz authors on Google Play, but not you. Is this some oddity because I’m in Canada?

  • Jon Fist says:

October 23 hmmm. Pre-ordered on Amazon so I get it on Tuesday. Should only need to take off Wednesday-Friday. Submitting vacatio request presently.

  • Ben Landsee says:

    What is the Canadian date?

  • Shop says:

    Great news. Can’t wait.

  • GC says:

    Woohoo, Early Birthday Present!!

  • Dking says:

    Can’t wait!

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve now read through your books as I just can’t find any other books that match up.

Anybody you would recommend while waiting?

  • Huzzah for bringing the pub date forward! Now if only they would make the U.S. covers as good as the UK ones.

  • Jon Fist says:

    Dking,

Check out “Heroes Die” by Mathew Woodring Stover. Action sequences nearly as cinematic and visceral as Joe’s.

  • Daniel S says:

Hey Joe (I’ve always wanted to start a message that way, and not follow up with ‘where you goin’ with that gun in your hand’), any idea on a release date for the colonies. Or should I be looking to import? Cheers Daniel (from Oz).

  • Jim Parfitt says:

Hello Mr Abercrombie, I hope this question is not too awkward, but just how tall are you?

  • AntMac says:

    Yes, my thoughts exactly.
Joe mate. Anzaclands did not wait two or three years to say ‘Where she goes, we go. Where she stands, we stand’. We were in like Flynn* from day one, sunshine, in fact NZ went up and captured the Hun at Fiji to start the parties off with a bang.

Here is hoping we get ours before cousin Johnathan does.

*Not Flynn himself, of course, he was in Hollywood, with the dames and the champange. J/k, am excited, only a hundred days or so to wait!.

  • Thaddeus says:

For a moment (being sleepy) I thought your ‘monitor’ was like a reader or editor, and was a bit surprised at your response.

Anyway, glad the book’s coming along nicely, and I’m looking forward to the next whisky deathmatch.

  • Joe Abercrombie says:

    Damon,
Yes, yes, this is communist Russia.

    Eric James,
Not sure. The whole ebook availability is a massive ball ache, honestly, so many different territories, formats and retailers, it’s virtually impossible to make sure everything is available everywhere. I try my best…

    On the colonies,
In theory it should appear there the same time it does in the UK, but I’m not absolutely sure of the technicalities of distribution. I’ll be touring in Australia in the first half of November, so there should definitely be books there at that point. Otherwise it’ll be a bit of a waste of time…

    Jim Parfitt,
Er, about six foot six in my six inch heels.

    Thaddeus,
Since I am a venomously ambitious sociopath without the feelings of guilt or remorse, that probably is how I would react to the death of a close friend or work colleague.

  • Cara(Eli) says:

hahaha I was accused of mistreating my aunt with added threats of calling child welfare, seeing how bad I treated my relatives. I explained that I didn’t put my aunt in the hallway during thunderstorms, Doris was our dog. Was then accused of offending everybody for giving my dogs stupid names. Our present dog is named Georg and he makes kissing sounds when waiting for a treat…

I’ll be getting the UK version. w00t!

Just curious, Joe, are your books translated into Norwegian? How many languages have your books been translated into?

  • Thaddeus says:

I *knew* Shivers was based on you!

  • JonathanL says:

God bless those folks at Orbit books.

Really. Monthly sales, pub dates moving up, they’re super keen.

  • americangirl says:

    This is great news!!!

  • Weedypants says:

    Gee, awesome!

In the US we need to get us all the reasons to celebrate that we can. After all, those court guys just ruled that Obamahealth (spit spit) is legal. Damn Communist health care. Goddamn!

And can someone get us some cheap oil or coal or shit? Tomorrow I gotta drive my V8 down from Michigan to Utah, get me an all you can eat steak buffet.

  • Aaron Tomey says:

    Thaddeus
I always pictured Mr. Abercombie as Glokta. You know, someone who would fuck you up at the drop of a hat.

  • Phil Norris says:

I have had 2 emails from Amazon over past week, release date went from Oct 22nd to Oct 18th and then back to the 22nd.

Think they might be getting bit confused.

  • A-drain says:

    I have a thought.

Make it the 29th of October and you then can claim it is a birthday present for your good buddy A-drain.

  • Curtis says:

WeedyPants cmon man why you trying to kill my joy with talk of politics on the web site of my one of my favorite authors? We dont need that just be happy about the fact we have a day of joy coming in Oct. Thanks for the word Joe! *Fires a glitter cannon to celebrate*

  • AntMac says:

I wonder if he wasn’t trying out the irony font on us?.

I suspect he was, but then sometimes people can be deadly serious about things and it just looks ironic because it would be a stupid thing to be serious about.

If he wasn’t, can I just point out to him, it is Socialist Healthcare. The Communist flavour healthcare would be recieving an order from the commissar to report to the Siberia Health and Care Facilty for the Unwell and Politically Suspect.

  • Curtis says:

No AM I suspect he’s republican they have no ironic sense or sense of humor for that matter.

  • Dan says:

Please no politics here. Just stop.

  • Jacob says:

    American or English politics?

  • Ryan says:

    Joe,

With a firm release date set now, get your people on turning your website into Red Country!!

  • Florian says:

Hey Joe, do you have any information about a german translation? your last books where announced relatively short after the original version. but this time no information 🙁 ok, reading the original would be better without a question, but as native german i really would appreciate a translation. sad enough that random house has stopped tom lloyd being translated after the third book… i hope this will not happen again!

  • Curtis says:

    Does it matter?

  • Rob Neal says:

Dking- try ‘The Lies of Locke Lamore’ by Scott Lynch. The book is great, and Lynch also gives a good quote.

Joe A- will the new audiobook be out at the same time as the hardback?

All- totally agree, no politics. Go and watch the West Wing ( came a bit late to this, on season 2 now!) or Yes Minister instead.

  • Curtis says:

Florian pay no attention to my post I didnt mean for it to land there sorry. Agreed no politics.

  • Rick says:

Man, I cannot wait until October 23rd. I’m gonna have to buy a ticket for London for the 18th.

  • marty says:

I’ll just buy the Red Country hardcover twice and pirate the ebook so I can have it with me forever and always on my phone.

Such a sad state of affairs that the ease of digital publishing is hampered with the immovability of brick and mortar.

    A fan.

  • Sven says:

    hey Joe,

Remember me? I’m the Belgian guy that paid a lot of money for an arc of “the heroes” on ebay when that one was coming out. Any chance perhaps on you sending me a signed one this time around? 😉 Otherwise I may have to pull the same stunt 😀 Anyway, I’m looking forward to your new book and I have it on preorder already. Doing signigns in Belgium? Holland? UK?
    Greetings & hi from Belgium!

  • Mari says:

A bit late to the party, but… Just a few days ago amazon insisted I had to wait until November 20, making me a very, very sad American. My birthday is the UK release date, you see. It’s a pleasure to know that it’ll only be late by five days as opposed to a month. Still, makes me wish I lived in England…
