Is there no end to the talents of Jon Armstrong? As well as being the author of the acclaimed sf book Grey, he also does frequent and regular podcasts. He’s a nominee for this year’s Campbell Award for best new writer, and he’s in the process of interviewing the other five nominees. This week’s interviewee? Well how nice of you to ask. It’s only fantasy author Joe Abercrombie. I frakkin’ love that guy!
Check it out, if you dare, at If You’re Just Joining Us… and hear me talk out of my ass on the subjects of fantasy, family, role-playing, writing tricks and massive success. It is a hoot.
Obviously, as always, I take no responsibility for complete ignorance/total hypocrisy/factual inaccuracy etc. Even less responsibility than usual, in fact, since speaking live gives you less time to make sure you’re properly qualifying your responses. Something I always do exhaustively here on my blog, of course…

A question: how on earth do you manage to have exactly the same pose (with exactly the same backdrop) in every single photo of you in every single one of your interviews that I’ve seen? It’s a most remarkable skill!
Also, didn’t you realise that one pronounces “laugh” as “larf”, not “laff”?
(Though with the crazy background music, that’s forgivable.)
I expected some dashing non-standard English in this interview, but hey, you can’t have everything. A very interesting piece of information concerned the first draft of Best Served Cold. It is almost finished…
PS Ah sweet anticipation
Hi Joe,
Good to be able to put a voice to the meglomania, did I say that, I meant face.
Can you put out a podcast of you saying ‘MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE’
I need a new message alert.
Glad to hear Best Served Cold will be with us soon.
Good Interview
Like Swainson said nice to put a voice to the face/megalomania etc
good look with the Campbell Award and I look forward to hearing you either
A)- Slag off the other contenders when one of them beats you two it
or
B)- Slag off the other contenders when you beat them to it
Hey joe – i had no idea where else to put this so i might as well put it here.

Just in case you haven’t seen it before what do you think ?
Personally i think its awesome. Though its probably too tame and scar-less to be Logen.
Alex,
I have not moved from that position for the past six years.
And not where I come from.
Daft,
About 80%?
Swainson,
Soon…ish.
Jason,
I can pretty much guarantee you one of the two.
Anon,
Yeah, I saw it a while ago, in fact I think I blogged way back when about his first efforts at modelling the head. Looks kind of more like a Threetrees than a Logen for my money, but it’s pretty amazing work, no doubt.
By soon I mean any time in the next year is good enough.
Longer and you may have a few stroppy people out here.
I don’t know where the notion came from, I just thought that Joe Abercrombie speaks dashing non-standard English. Luckily you didn’t and I understood what you were talking about in the interview. It reminded me of my own pen and paper roleplay sessions. It’s been a while since.
Hi Joe!
Just wanted to say hi, and to say I think your books are the best and most original things to come out of the fantasy mould for a long time. I live in a shared flat, and have had great pleasure in spreading your storys, infection like, to all my flatmates.
They now also think you rock.
Keep ’em coming!
